FCCPC-Approved Loan Apps in Nigeria: The Official List, Explained (2026) — Rateweb

Hundreds of loan apps operate in Nigeria — and not all of them are legal. The Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission (FCCPC) keeps the official register of approved digital lenders, and checking it takes two minutes. This page explains how the register works, who's on it, and how to verify any app before you borrow.

The register at a glance

As of mid-2026, the FCCPC (with the CBN) lists roughly:

  • 457 fully approved digital lenders — met every technical, legal and ethical requirement;
  • 35 conditionally approved — legal, completing final documentation;
  • 103 on a watchlist — under scrutiny for potential unethical practices;
  • plus delisted apps removed from app stores for violations.

(Numbers change as the FCCPC updates the register — always check the live list: FCCPC approved Digital Money Lenders.)

Two kinds of "approved" — and why it matters

Legal digital lenders operate under one of two bases:

  1. CBN Microfinance Bank (MFB) licence — e.g. FairMoney, Carbon, Renmoney. These are licensed banks; deposits with them are also NDIC-insured.
  2. FCCPC-registered Digital Money Lender (DML) — e.g. Branch, Aella. Registered under the FCCPC's digital-lending framework.

Both are legal routes; the licence basis changes who supervises them and what obligations they carry.

How to verify any loan app in 2 minutes

  1. Open the FCCPC approved-DML list.
  2. Search the company name (the company, not just the app name — apps are often listed under an operating company).
  3. Not there, or on the watchlist/delisted set? Don't borrow from it.
  4. Cross-check the app shows a verifiable Nigerian office address and an FCCPC reference on its site or store listing.

If an app pressures you to skip these checks, that's your answer.

Approved doesn't mean cheap

Approval means the lender is legal and supervised — not that its rates are good. Short-tenure app loans can still be very expensive once fees are included. Always compare the total repayable before accepting — see our best loan apps in Nigeria comparison.

Frequently asked questions

Is approved by the FCCPC? Search the live register linked above — it's the only authoritative answer, and the list changes.

What if an approved app mistreats me? Report it to the FCCPC. Approval is conditional on conduct — apps have been watchlisted and delisted for debt-shaming and privacy abuses.

Are loan apps the same as banks? No — some hold CBN MFB licences (bank-like), others are FCCPC-registered lenders. Both are legal; see the licence-basis section above.
