How we rate financial products

Rateweb's star ratings and awards are our independent editorial opinion, built to help Nigerians choose well — not to reward whoever pays us.

What our star ratings mean

Each product is scored out of five stars. The headline rating is a weighted blend of the factors that matter most for that product type, for example:

  • Cost — interest rates, fees, and the true cost over time.
  • Features & flexibility — what you actually get, and how it adapts to your needs.
  • Eligibility & access — how realistically a typical Nigerian applicant can qualify.
  • Transparency & service — clear terms, support, and digital experience.

Where shown, the rating breakdown lets you see the sub-scores behind the headline number.

Our awards

We give "Best for…" awards (such as Best overall or Best for low fees) to standout products in each category. Awards are reviewed regularly as products and prices change.

How we stay independent

  • Ratings are decided editorially and are never influenced by commercial relationships.
  • Rateweb may earn a commission when you apply through some links, at no cost to you. Sponsored placements are always clearly labelled — see how we make money.
  • We use publicly available product information and confirm details with providers where possible.

Keeping ratings current

Financial products change often. We review ratings and product details on an ongoing basis, and you can request a correction if something looks wrong.

How we keep our guides accurate

Our editorial standards apply to every guide, not just product ratings:

  • Fact-checked. Rates, fees, dates and rules are verified against authoritative Nigerian sources (provider terms and the relevant financial regulators) before we publish or refresh an article.
  • Reviewed and dated. Guides are re-checked on a schedule; older content is flagged for refresh so the information you read stays current.
  • Well connected. We link generously to related Rateweb guides, comparisons and calculators so you can go deeper and see the full picture.
  • Authored. Articles carry a named author and, where relevant, an expert reviewer.

Spotted something out of date or incorrect? Please tell us — we fix errors quickly.

Ratings and awards are Rateweb's editorial opinion and general information only — not financial advice or a recommendation for your personal circumstances. Always confirm details with the provider before applying.
