How to Buy Shares on the NGX (Nigerian Stock Exchange) in 2026 — Rateweb

You don't need to be rich or "connected" to own a piece of Dangote, MTN or a Nigerian bank — you can start on the Nigerian Exchange (NGX) with as little as a few thousand naira, from your phone. Here's exactly how, and what to know first.

How to Buy Shares on the NGX (Nigerian Stock Exchange) in 2026

Shares can fall. The NGX rewards patient, long-term investors, but prices go down as well as up. Invest money you can leave for years, and never money you can't afford to lose.

What you need

  • A SEC-licensed stockbroker or a NGX-member investment app — this is who places your trades. It must be regulated by the SEC and a member of the Exchange.
  • A CSCS account — the Central Securities Clearing System account that holds your shares electronically, in your name. Your broker/app opens it for you during sign-up.
  • NIN, BVN, a valid ID, and a Nigerian bank account — for KYC, funding trades, and receiving dividends.

How much to start

You can start small: some brokers begin around ₦10,000, and several apps let you in from about ₦1,000–₦5,000. Apps like Bamboo, Trove and Chaka let you invest online with no branch visit and open your CSCS account automatically — the easiest route for beginners. (These same apps also give you US stocks.)

How to buy — step by step

  1. Pick a broker or app (SEC-licensed, NGX member).
  2. Register and complete KYC — NIN, BVN, ID, bank details — and your CSCS account is opened for you.
  3. Fund your account in naira.
  4. Place your order — search the stock, choose how many shares (or the naira amount), and buy.
  5. Settlement is now T+1 — since 1 June 2026, trades settle one business day after the trade date.

How to invest sensibly

  • Diversify — don't put everything in one stock; consider several, or a fund/index for instant spread (see mutual funds).
  • Think long term — the market rewards patience, not panic-trading.
  • Reinvest dividends — many NGX companies pay dividends; reinvesting compounds returns.
  • Want property exposure too? You can buy REITs on the NGX the same way — see how to invest in real estate.
