What is a BVN, and Why Every Nigerian Bank Account Needs One (2026)
Your Bank Verification Number (BVN) is the single most important number in your financial life in Nigeria — one identity that ties together every account you hold, at every bank. Here's what it is, how to find yours, and how it now works alongside your NIN.
What a BVN actually is
A BVN is a unique 11-digit number issued to you once, tied to your biometrics (fingerprints + photo) in a central banking database. It gives you one identity across the whole banking system: open accounts at five different banks and they all link to the same BVN.
Crucially: one BVN per person, many accounts. You don't get a new BVN for each bank — every account you own links back to your single BVN. That's what lets banks (and lenders) see your true footprint, and why a loan default follows your BVN everywhere.
How to check your BVN
Dial *565*0# from the phone number linked to your account — your BVN appears on screen. You can also ask at any branch. (Confirm the USSD code with your bank; codes occasionally change.)
BVN + NIN: the linkage rule
Since a CBN directive, your BVN and National Identification Number (NIN) must be linked to your accounts as part of stronger KYC ("know your customer") rules. As it has stood:
- Tier 2 and Tier 3 accounts/wallets must have both BVN and NIN.
- Tier 1 accounts/wallets must have at least one of the two.
The CBN also revised the BVN framework in 2026 — so treat the exact tier rules and any deadlines as things to confirm on cbn.gov.ng or with your bank before acting, because accounts that fall out of compliance can be restricted.
Why it matters to you
- Access: no BVN, no real bank account, and no most loans.
- Fraud protection: the BVN watch-list flags accounts linked to confirmed fraud — part of why you must never share your BVN with strangers.
- Your credit: your borrowing and repayment history is recorded against your BVN and seen by lenders — see how to check your credit score.
Frequently asked questions
Is my BVN secret like a PIN? Your BVN isn't a password and can't move money on its own — but don't share it freely. Never give it in response to an unsolicited call, SMS or link.
Can I have more than one BVN? No — one BVN per person. Having multiple BVNs is an offence and gets accounts flagged. If you think you have two, tell your bank to merge them.
What if the phone number linked to my BVN is lost? Visit your bank branch with valid ID to update it and retrieve your BVN.
