Government Grants for Small Businesses in Nigeria (2026) — and the Scams to Avoid — Rateweb

"Free money" for your business is real — the government does run grant schemes — but grant scams are everywhere, and they cost people far more than they ever win. Here's what's genuinely available, how to apply legitimately, and the rules that keep you safe.

Government Grants for Small Businesses in Nigeria (2026) — and the Scams to Avoid

The one rule that beats every scam: a real government grant never asks you to pay an upfront "processing", "application" or "release" fee. If anyone does, it's a scam — walk away.

What's actually available

  • FG ₦1 Billion MSME Grant / National MSME Awards — a Federal Government scheme (run in 2026 with an application window that has since closed) awarding grants across ~12 sectors. Watch official channels for the next round. Eligibility centred on being 18+ with a registered business and proper documentation.
  • MSMEDF (MSME Development Fund) — a CBN fund; a portion is grants for capacity-building and development, with the rest as low-cost loans.
  • State and agency programmes — states and agencies (via SMEDAN, BOI and others) run periodic grants, competitions and empowerment schemes.

Note: some things marketed as "grants" are actually low-interest loans — for example AGSMEIS is a 9% no-collateral loan, not free money. Know which you're applying for.

How to apply legitimately

  1. Register your business first — most grants require a CAC number. Start with free CAC registration.
  2. Get your documents ready — CAC certificate, Tax ID, a simple business plan, and (increasingly) a short video of your business.
  3. Apply only through official portals — the FG/SMEDAN, CBN, NIRSAL MFB or the relevant agency's own website. Cross-check any announcement against the official source.
  4. Never pay a fee, and never route your application through an "agent" promising guaranteed approval.

How to spot a grant scam

  • Upfront fees of any kind — the biggest red flag.
  • "Guaranteed" approval or a suspiciously easy process.
  • Unofficial links (fake portals mimicking government sites) — check the domain.
  • Requests for your bank OTP/PIN — no legitimate grant needs those.
  • Pressure to act "now" or lose the slot.

If grants aren't open, funding still is

Grant windows come and go. When none is open, the government funding schemes and business loans are always there — see AGSMEIS, MSMEDF & DBN explained, BOI loans, and compare options on our business loans page.
