How to Get a TIN in Nigeria (2026): NIN, CAC & the New Tax ID
Good news: getting a Tax Identification Number in Nigeria is now simpler and free. Under the 2026 tax reforms your NIN (as an individual) or CAC number (as a business) doubles as your Tax ID — and you can generate it online in minutes. Here's how it works now.
Not tax advice. This explains the process in general terms — confirm the current steps on the official NRS portal (the tax office, formerly FIRS).
The big 2026 change
From 1 January 2026, Nigeria simplified tax IDs:
- Individuals: your National Identification Number (NIN) now serves as your Tax ID.
- Businesses: your CAC registration number (RC/BN) serves as your corporate Tax ID.
There's also a new 13-digit Tax ID alongside the legacy 10-digit TIN, and banks now require it — they're obliged to collect it for business accounts, so you may be asked for yours.
Do you even need one?
If you earn income through a job, trade or any economic activity — yes. If you don't earn (for example a student or dependent), you generally don't need to obtain one. Businesses need theirs to open a corporate account, invoice, and access funding.
How to get / retrieve your Tax ID
Fastest (individuals):
- Go to the NRS Tax ID portal —
taxid.nrs.gov.ng. - Enter your NIN and date of birth.
- Your Tax ID is generated — free, in under 5 minutes. (Don't have a NIN? See what is the NIN.)
Companies:
- Enrol in TaxPro Max (the NRS tax-administration system) and validate your TIN if you haven't. Your CAC number links to it. Registration is free; your TIN typically arrives by email within 24–72 hours.
What you'll need it for
- Opening a corporate bank account (banks now require the 13-digit Tax ID).
- Filing and paying tax through TaxPro Max — including the new PAYE bands and crypto/forex gains.
- Government contracts, grants and funding applications.
If you haven't registered your business yet, do that first — see free CAC registration — since your CAC number is your business Tax ID.
Frequently asked questions

How much does a TIN cost? Nothing — registration/retrieval via the NRS portal (or TaxPro Max for companies) is free. Never pay an agent for it.
Is FIRS still the tax office? It's now the Nigeria Revenue Service (NRS) under the 2025 reform.
Educational information, not tax advice. The tax-ID process and portals are new for 2026 — confirm the current steps on the official NRS channels, and never pay for a free service.
