How to Link Your BVN and NIN in Nigeria (2026)
Your BVN and NIN are now the backbone of your financial identity — and if they're not linked to your accounts, your bank can freeze your ability to transact. Here's what's required, how to check and link them, and one 2026 rule that catches people out.
This is not optional. The CBN requires your accounts to carry your BVN and NIN. Non-compliant accounts get placed on "Post No Debit" — you can't send money out until you fix it.
What's required
- Tier 2 and Tier 3 accounts/wallets (most normal accounts) must have both a BVN and a NIN.
- Tier 1 (basic, low-limit) accounts must have either a BVN or a NIN.
- Without a NIN in 2026, you generally can't open a new bank account, get a passport, register for JAMB/NYSC, or get a SIM — so it's worth sorting regardless.
The 2026 rule that catches people out
Under the CBN's updated BVN rules, you can only change the phone number linked to your BVN once for the rest of your life. So:
- Link your BVN to a secure, long-term number you'll keep — ideally the same one tied to your NIN.
- Use your single change wisely; after that, changing it needs exceptional regulatory approval.
How to check what you have
- Check your BVN: dial *565*0# from your registered line, or view it in your bank's mobile app / at a branch.

- Confirm your name and date of birth match across your BVN, NIN and bank records — mismatches are the most common reason linkage fails.
How to link them to your account
- Log into your bank's mobile app (or visit a branch) and go to the profile/KYC section.
- Enter your NIN (and BVN if not already captured) and submit.
- Fix any mismatch — if your name/DOB differs between NIN and bank, correct it (a NIN modification at NIMC, or a bank update) before it'll link cleanly.
- Verify the account is fully active afterwards — no "Post No Debit" flag.
