SME Loans Without Collateral in Nigeria (2026)
No property to pledge doesn't have to mean no funding. A growing set of lenders now assess Nigerian businesses on cash flow, transaction history and BVN record rather than bricks and mortar. Here are the real collateral-light options — and how to qualify.
The main collateral-free (or -light) routes
- CBN intervention schemes. Government-backed funds with low rates and long
tenors:
- AGSMEIS — targets MSMEs; historically a low single-digit rate (around 5%), long tenor (up to ~7 years) with a moratorium period. Confirm the scheme is currently open and its terms with the CBN / your bank.
- MSMEDF (MSME Development Fund) — on-lent to businesses through participating financial institutions.
- Development Bank of Nigeria (DBN). DBN doesn't lend to you directly — it funds participating banks and microfinance banks who on-lend to SMEs, so you apply through a PFI, not DBN.
- Commercial-bank cash-flow lending. Post-recapitalisation, banks such as Access, UBA and Stanbic IBTC offer cash-flow-based SME products that don't always need landed property.
- Licensed fintech lenders. Moniepoint, Carbon, FairMoney and similar assess creditworthiness from your transaction data and BVN history — the most accessible collateral-free option for smaller amounts. Only borrow from lenders on the FCCPC-approved register.
What you'll generally need to qualify
- A valid BVN (and a clean repayment record against it — defaults follow your BVN everywhere).
- A trading history (often 3–12 months) with verifiable revenue through a bank account or payment platform.
- CAC registration for anything above micro-level.
The pattern is clear: your bank/payment records are your new collateral. Running your business income through a proper account, consistently, is what unlocks these loans.
Cautions
- Read the total cost. Collateral-free often means higher rates — compare the full cost of credit, not the headline.
- Scheme scams. Government "grants/loans" are a common fraud hook. Apply only through official channels (CBN, DBN PFIs, boi.ng) — never pay a fee to "release" a government loan.
Frequently asked questions
Can I really get a business loan with no collateral in Nigeria? Yes — through CBN schemes, DBN's partner banks, cash-flow bank products and licensed fintech lenders, which weigh your cash flow and BVN record over assets.
What's the cheapest option? Government intervention schemes (e.g. AGSMEIS) are usually cheapest when open; fintech loans are fastest but pricier. Match the route to your need — see the business loans guide.
Does a bad loan record follow me? Yes — defaults are recorded against your BVN and seen by other lenders. Protect your BVN's record.
Educational information, not financial advice. Verify every scheme's current status and terms with the official provider, and only use FCCPC-licensed lenders.
