Your National Identification Number (NIN) is becoming the identity number in Nigeria — the one your bank, SIM, and increasingly every service will validate against. Here's what it is, how to get it (free), and what the new NIMC Act 2026 changes.
What the NIN is
The NIN is a unique 11-digit number issued by the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) that identifies you as a citizen or legal resident. It's tied to your biometrics, and — like your BVN — you get one for life.
How to get it — for free
- Enrol at any NIMC enrolment centre (find the list on nimc.gov.ng).
- Enrolment and NIN issuance are completely free — never pay a "fee" for the NIN itself (agents may charge for help; the NIN is free).
- NIMC says the number is generated within 1–5 working days of verified data capture.
How to check your NIN
- Dial *346# from the phone number you registered with NIMC and follow the prompt to retrieve your NIN.
- Or check the 11-digit number on the top-left of your enrolment slip.
- Some BVN holders have been auto-allocated a NIN as BVN and NIMC data are
harmonised — dial

The NIMC Act 2026 — why this matters more now
In 2026, the NIMC Act 2026 was signed into law, reinforcing the NIN as Nigeria's primary identity credential and aiming to collapse the fragmented systems (NIN, BVN, driver's licence, passport) into one biometric identity. In practice, that means the NIN is only going to matter more for banking, SIMs and government services. Confirm which provisions are in force on nimc.gov.ng before relying on specifics.
