How to Open a Bank Account in Nigeria (2026)
Opening a Nigerian bank account is faster than it used to be — many can be done from your phone in minutes with electronic KYC. Here's what you need, how the account tiers work, and how to use USSD banking once you're set up.
The three account tiers (KYC)
Nigerian accounts come in three KYC tiers — the more identity you provide, the higher your transaction limits:
- Tier 1 — lightest KYC (often just BVN/NIN + phone), lowest limits. Good for starting out or a simple wallet. (Example daily limits vary by provider — one neobank's Tier 1 is ~₦50,000/day.)
- Tier 2 — more documents, higher limits (e.g. ~₦500,000/day).
- Tier 3 — full KYC, highest daily volumes (e.g. ~₦5,000,000/day).
Confirm current tier limits with the provider / on cbn.gov.ng — they change.
What you'll typically need
- BVN and NIN (used for electronic KYC — see what a BVN is and the NIN).
- A valid ID and, for higher tiers, proof of address and a passport photo.
With BVN + NIN, many banks and neobanks open an account in minutes, entirely in-app.
Traditional bank or neobank?
- Traditional banks (Access, GTBank, Zenith, UBA, First Bank…) — branches, wide ATM networks, full product range.
- Neobanks / fintechs (OPay, Moniepoint, Kuda, PalmPay…) — app-first, often lower fees. Confirm the provider is CBN-licensed and NDIC-covered — is my money safe in a neobank?

Using USSD banking (no internet needed)
Once you have an account, you can bank by dialling a short USSD code — handy
when data is down. Common codes include OPay *955#, First Bank *894#,
FCMB *329# and Sterling *822#. (Codes change — confirm yours with
your bank.)
To transfer by USSD: dial your bank's code → choose "Transfer to bank account" → enter the recipient's details and amount → authorise with your USSD PIN.
Safety: your USSD PIN is like your card PIN — never share it, and if you change SIM/phone, re-secure your USSD banking. See how to avoid bank fraud.
Frequently asked questions
Can I open an account without going to a branch? Often yes — with BVN + NIN, many banks and neobanks let you open a Tier 1/2 account in-app in minutes.
Which tier should I choose? Start where your limits fit your usage; upgrade to a higher tier (more KYC) when you need bigger daily transactions.
Do I need both a BVN and a NIN? For higher-tier accounts, generally yes — check the current linkage rules.
